Innocent smiles

Sr.Jamila Emanuel of the Dominican Sisters of St Catherine of Siena has now left the PBK Centre after eight years of invaluable service. She has now returned to her Congregation.

The loveliest word of thanks is surely that heard in the uplifted voices of the children of Kabul: TASHUKKOR!

This is what Sr Jamila writes:

I served for eight years in Kabul, working in the PBK Centre, which welcomes mentally disabled children. The aim of the Centre is to give these children independence in their daily lives, as far as their abilities make this possible. Some come from very poor families, others from families that are better off. But all the children are equal. Their joys and sorrows are the same. Working with these children I experienced something beautiful … their innocent smiles, which come from innocent hearts. They are always ready to forgive and forget. In just a second they are sharing toys with those they were quarrelling with moments before.

When they arrive at the Centre each morning and greet you with smiling faces, those innocent smiles make you forget all your worries!

Working with these children has helped me understand the words of our Master, who says, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of God belongs” (Mk. 10:14).
The children are an open book about a beautiful universe in which we can meditate on the beauty and goodness of the Creator of all things, for whom nothing is useless, nothing is out of place. For me, there was never enough time to learn from these innocent smiles of the children to whom the Kingdom of Heaven belongs.
